The news: Labor has secured a deal with the Greens to overhaul federal environmental protection laws.

The context: The Greens have agreed to support Labor’s re-write of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act after securing further concessions from the government following prolonged negotiations.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the deal on Thursday morning, saying the changes would herald “a new era for the environment and productivity in Australia.”

Albanese said the laws will pass the Senate today, more than five years after Graeme Samuel's review recommended sweeping changes to protect the country's environment.
