Pakistan PM backs peace progress, US media reports Iran agreeing to give up uranium
More news: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has welcomed the “extraordinary efforts” from US President Donald Trump to “pursue peace” in a post on X.
He said Trump had a “very useful and productivity telephone call” with the leaders of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey, Egypt, the UAE and Jordan, alongside a representative from Pakistan.
“The discussions provided a useful opportunity to exchange views on the current regional situation and how to move the ongoing peace efforts forward to bring lasting peace in the region.
“Pakistan will continue its peace efforts with utmost sincerity and we hope to host the next round of talks very soon,” he said.
The New York Times is reporting US officials have said a key part of the deal is a commitment from Tehran to give up its stockpile of highly enriched uranium, but so far it does not settle the specifics of how this would occur. The details are expected to be worked out in future talks.
‘Largely negotiated’: Trump signals progress on end to US-Iran war
The news: US President Donald Trump has indicated a deal with Iran could be struck soon, writing on Truth Social on Sunday morning (AEST) that he is in the Oval Office and had a “very good call” concerning Iran.
What they said: “An Agreement has been largely negotiated, subject to finalization,” Trump said.
“Separately, I had a call with Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu, of Israel, which, likewise, went very well. Final aspects and details of the Deal are currently being discussed, and will be announced shortly.”
“In addition to many other elements of the Agreement, the Strait of Hormuz will be opened.”
The context: There have been many attempts at a peace deal between the US and Iran. The Wall Street Journal, citing an unnamed official, said Trump was prepared to resume attacks if the deal isn’t stuck to.
Meanwhile, Associated Press is reporting that regional officials with knowledge of the talks are saying “last-minute disputes” could derail the deal. However, this is one of the most emphatic posts yet from Trump about the potential for a deal with Iran.
The official said the deal would declare the end of the war, the Strait would open, there would be a two-month negotiation on Iran’s nuclear program and the US would end its blockade.
