The news: Lithium miner Liontown Resources has narrowed its half-year loss after starting its first production of spodumene concentrate during the period.

The numbers: The company reported a net loss of $15.2 million for the six months to December, down from a $31.3 million loss a year ago. Revenue for the period totalled $100.4 million, with sales of 100,240 wet metric tonnes of concentrate.

The context: The half-year result follows commencement of production at the company’s new Kathleen Valley mine in Western Australia on 31 July last year, with its maiden shipment departing on 27 September. Liontown, which counts billionaire Gina Rinehart as a key shareholder, said it had revised down its production rate to 2.3 million tonnes per annum from the end of FY25 in response to the low price environment for lithium chemicals. It will focus on higher margin ore, with the option for future expansion once the market improves.
