Lynas produces first separated terbium oxide at Malaysian plant
The news: Lynas Rare Earths has announced first production of terbium oxide at its Malaysia facility, about a month after it became the first commercial producer of separated heavy rare earth products outside China.
The context: In May, Lynas Malaysia announced the first production of dysprosium oxide and has kept in line with the previously announced first production schedule for terbium.
Exports of dysprosium and terbium out of China, which dominates production, are among the rare earths metals and related magnets that are subject to strict licensing arrangements imposed in April as a response to US President Donald Trump’s tariffs.
This was a sticking point that re-sparked US-China trade tensions earlier this month, although China later agreed to accelerate export licence processing for non-military US manufacturers.
What they said: “Together with Dysprosium Oxide, which was first produced on our new heavy rare earths production line in May, Lynas can now supply customers with the two heavy rare earths required for rare earth permanent magnets used in electric motors,” Lynas chief executive and managing director Amanda Lacaze said.
