The news: Lynas Rare Earths has faced “significant power supply disruptions” affecting its Kalgoorlie rare earths processing facility, which is provided by Western Power’s Eastern Goldfield load permissive scheme.

The context: In November, the level of outage frequency and duration have resulted in “significant lost production of mixed rare earth carbonate”.

This will affect production of finished goods at Lynas’ Malaysian facility, which will be registered within the quarter although the company said it is not able to quantify the exact shortfall.

The shortfall in mixed rare earth carbonate cannot be made up by Lynas’ Malaysian kilns because they were shut down for scheduled major maintenance.

Lynas is also “urgently assessing off-grid power solutions” which should enable lost production to be recovered within the financial year.

While Lynas initially thought the power supply’s “indicative reliability levels were consistent with the requirements to run the Kalgoorlie facility safely and efficiently”, during 2025 there has been “a significant increase in power supply disruptions”.

The company said it is working with the WA Government and its state-owned grid operator Western Power to identify the causes of the recent outages and improvement options.
