Lynas Rare Earths produces first samarium oxide at Malaysia site
The news: Lynas Rare Earths has reached first production of samarium oxide at its Malaysian operation.
The context: Lynas said the milestone increases the company’s separated heavy rare earth oxide product range to three products, alongside separated dysprosium and terbium.
The group had previously targeted first production of samarium oxide by April, after announcing the expansion of Lynas Malaysia’s separated heavy rare earth facility in October last year.
Capacity at the facility will be progressively expanded over the next two years, with the initial flowsheet including separated samarium, gadolinium, dysprosium, terbium, yttrium and lutetium.
What they said: “The achievement of first samarium oxide, on spec and ahead of schedule, is a significant milestone for Lynas and demonstrates the expertise and capability of our inhouse team which is unique outside China,” said Lynas CEO and managing director Amanda Lacaze.
“The addition of samarium oxide means that we can provide an expanded suite of light and heavy rare earths that customers will use to produce high performance permanent magnets.”
