Mayne Pharma CEO Shawn Patrick O’Brien replaced by CFO Aaron Gray
The news: Mayne Pharma CEO Shawn Patrick O’Brien stepped down on 20 February and has been replaced by CFO Aaron Gray in the wake of its collapsed $600 million deal to be acquired by Cosette Pharmaceuticals.
The numbers: The company reported a lower first-half loss of $12.1 million compared to the $20 million in the previous corresponding period. Gray said this was attributed to “disciplined margin management” despite the uncertainty and costs of the Cosette transaction process.
The context: Shawn Patrick O’Brien joined the company in October 2022 and will remain available to the board as an adviser until 1 May 2026 to facilitate an orderly transition.
Gray joined Mayne in July 2022 and has been chief financial officer since August 2022. He previously held senior finance roles at Siemens Healthineers and Siemens Energy.
The collapse of the Cosette deal continues to impact the company as it now looks to sue the former suitor for damages on behalf of its shareholders and to recoup costs. At the same time, Cosette is looking to appeal a previous NSW Supreme Court Decision that prevented it from terminating the deal prior to Treasurer Jim Chalmers’ intervention.
Gray said the company is continuing to “evaluate a variety of capital allocation priorities including share repurchases, targeted asset acquisitions, and expanding promotional activities across our segments”. The idea of selling off US assets was previously considered in consultation with shareholders.
What they said: “Shawn has guided the Company through a period of meaningful change with professionalism, energy and a clear focus on execution,” Mayne chair Bruce Robinson said.
Robinson also said the transition is “planned and orderly and “reflects our focus on maintaining momentum and execution”.
O’Brien said: “This is the right time for me to transition leadership to Aaron as we enter the next phase of execution. I’m proud of the progress the team has made, and I’m committed to supporting a smooth handover.”
“Through all of the changes made to the Mayne Pharma business, Aaron has demonstrated his knowledge and capabilities within the business and the industry. I have every confidence in Aaron’s leadership and Mayne Pharma’s strategy and future,” O’Brien said.
