The news: Meridian has announced its Harapaki wind farm is now fully operational, within a month of the original completion date and coming in under the $448 million budget.
The numbers: The wind farm can produce enough energy to power 70,000 typical usage homes, which would account for nearly all usage in neighbouring Hawke’s Bay.
It has been in operation since November 2023, and reached 90% operating capacity on 30 June 2024.
The context: The wind farm, located near Napier in the Maungaharuru Range, is now the second largest in operation in Aotearoa New Zealand.
It constitutes one of the seven renewable electricity projects Meridian aims to deliver in seven years, and contributes to New Zealand’s goal to become a net-zero economy.
What they said: “Harapaki shows we have the capacity to deliver,” Meridian general manager of development Guy Waipara said.
“We’ve got a world-class renewable construction team backed by a great group of contractors. What they’ve achieved in the face of Covid-19 and multiple weather events is truly outstanding.”
