Meta chief AI scientist Yann LeCun to depart to launch new AI venture
The news: Meta’s chief AI scientist Yann LeCun has announced that he will step down from the tech giant to found a startup focused on continuing the advanced machine intelligence research program he has been undertaking with Meta’s fundamental AI research group.
The context: In a LinkedIn post, LeCun said that “pursuing the goal of [advanced machine intelligence] in an independent entity is a way to maximise its broad impact”.
He said the goal of the startup is to “bring about the next big revolution in AI: systems that understand the physical world, have persistent memory, can reason, and can plan complex action sequences”.
LeCun will remain at Meta until the end of the year with Meta to be a partner of the new company. He first joined Meta in 2013 as director of AI research as Facebook AI Research and is considered one of the founding figures in AI research.
He leaves the company amid reports of internal tension following the founding of Meta’s superintelligence lab, its other AI research group.
