Meta introduces ad-free paid plans for Instagram and Facebook in Europe
The news: Facebook and Instagram users in Europe will be able to opt-out of targeted advertising in new paid plans aimed at complying with EU regulations, Reuters reports.
The numbers: Monthly subscription plans in the European Union, the European Economic Area and Switzerland will cost €9.99 ($16.64) for web users and €12.99 for iOS and Android users.
The context: Ireland's data privacy commissioner fined Meta €390 million after finding EU privacy law updates prohibited the tech giant from using box-tick terms of services contracts to send users ads based on their online activity. In August, Meta announced plans to move people in the EU, EEA and Switzerland to the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation's legal basis of consent.
What they said: "The option for people to purchase a subscription for no ads balances the requirements of European regulators while giving users choice and allowing Meta to continue serving all people in the EU, EEA and Switzerland," Meta said in a media release.
