The news: Meta on Friday announced plans to integrate content from major news organisations into its AI assistant to provide Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp users with real time content.

The context: The social media giant said that Meta AI will now offer a broader range of real-time content, including global news, entertainment, lifestyle stories, so that when users ask Meta AI news-related questions, they will receive information and links that draw on “diverse” and “tailored” content sources.

“These integrations will also facilitate easier access to information by linking out to articles, allowing you to visit these partners’ websites for more details while providing value to partners, enabling them to reach new audiences”, the platform said.

As a first step, Meta said it is partnering with CNN, Fox News, Fox Sports, Le Monde Group, the People Inc. portfolio of media brands, The Daily Caller, The Washington Examiner, USA TODAY and the USA TODAY Network.

The company said it will continue adding partnerships and developing new features as it remains “committed to making Meta AI more response, accurate, and balanced.”

While a number of AI companies have moved to incorporate live web content and news feed in their offering, like OpenAI and Perplexity, some news outlets have brought lawsuits against the moves, arguing the tech players are using content without authorisation or compensation.

On Friday the NYT and Chicago Tribune sued Perplexity AI, arguing the AI startup is copying and distributing their exclusive content.
