Meta releases Llama 3 AI model
The news: Meta Platforms has released early versions of its latest generation of open source large language model Meta Llama 3, as well as an image generator.
The context: The models will be integrated into its virtual assistant Meta AI that aims to help users “learn, get things done, create context, and connect to make the most out of every moment”.
Meta’s release of Llama 3 is its strategy to catch up to rival open source models such as OpenAI, with the company stating its goal was to build the best open model on par with the best proprietary models available.
The image generator allows users to create images from text in real time.
What they said: “We are embracing the open source ethos of releasing early and often to enable the community to get access to these models while they are still in development,” Meta said.
“The text-based models we are releasing today are the first in the Llama 3 collection of models. Our goal in the near future is to make Llama 3 multilingual and multimodal, have longer context, and continue to improve overall performance across core LLM capabilities such as reasoning and coding.”
