The news: Meta will add a technological form of watermarking to its text-to-image generation product to improve transparency and prevent people being deceived.

This will become part of Meta products and help people identify the original creator of an image, even if it has been edited by others.

The context: The company has AI products for consumers that can create realistic images and more. These are part of platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.

Meta has created Stable Signature, an invisible watermarking feature, to help users ascertain whether an image has been created by artificial intelligence or not.

What they said: "The research we’re sharing today focuses on images, but in the future we hope to explore the potential of integrating our Stable Signature method across more generative AI modalities. Our model works with many popular open source models, however there are still limitations," Meta said in a blog post.
