Meta to take US$15b Scale stake, CEO to lead 'superintelligence' lab: reports
The news: Meta has agreed to take a 49% stake in data labeling firm Scale AI for USD14.8 billion ($22.7 billion), The Information reported, placing CEO Alexandr Wang in a top position inside Meta.
`The numbers: The deal, which hasn’t been finalised, values Scale at USD28 billion including the cash invested, up from USD13.8 billion last year.
Wang will lead a new “superintelligence” lab at Meta alongside other top Scale technical employees, according to financial media reports.
Zuckerberg, frustrated by reaction to Meta’s Llama 4 model, is personally recruiting about 50 staff for the lab, Bloomberg reported.
Scale generated about USD870 million in revenue last year and expects more than USD2 billion in 2025, but missed prior sales and profit goals and lost about USD150 million before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation, according to The Information.
Jason Droege, Scale’s chief strategy officer who joined from Uber Eats less than a year ago, has been in discussions to become Scale’s new CEO, a source told the publication.
