Meta’s Zuckerberg launches ‘superintelligence labs’ unit
The news: Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has reorganised the company’s artificial intelligence efforts under a new group called Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), led by Alexandr Wang, former CEO of Scale AI, who will serve as chief AI officer.
According to a Bloomberg report that cites an internal memo sent Monday (Tuesday AEST), Nat Friedman, former CEO of GitHub, will partner with Wang to lead the group and head Meta’s work on AI products and applied research.
The new group will include Meta’s existing teams focused on large language models, AI products, and the Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) team, and will also create a new lab focused on developing the next generation of models, according to Zuckerberg’s post.
The context: Earlier this year, Meta invested USD14.3 billion in Scale AI and hired Wang in the process. In the memo, Zuckerberg also announced 11 new hires, including researchers and engineers from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, such as former DeepMind researchers Jack Rae and Pei Sun, OpenAI alumni, and Anthropic’s Joel Pobar.
What they said: Zuckerberg’s memo said Meta will spend “hundreds of billions” on AI projects and research in the years to come and is committed to leading the way in developing AI “superintelligence” systems that can complete tasks as well as or better than humans.
“As the pace of AI progress accelerates, developing superintelligence is coming into sight,” Zuckerberg wrote in the internal memo.
“I believe this will be the beginning of a new era for humanity, and I am fully committed to doing what it takes for Meta to lead the way.”
