The news: The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has opened a broad-ranging antitrust investigation into Microsoft, Bloomberg first reported.

The context: Antitrust enforcers have requested information ranging from the company’s cloud computing and software licensing businesses to cybersecurity offerings and artificial intelligence products, according to people familiar with the matter.

The probe was approved by FTC chair Lina Khan ahead of her likely departure in January. However, the outcome of the investigation is in doubt as president-elect Donald Trump is expected to appoint a Republican successor to Khan with a softer approach toward business.

FTC antitrust lawyers are set to meet with Microsoft competitors next week to gather more information about the company’s business practices, according to two other people familiar with the plans.
