The news: Microsoft is planning to spend USD10 billion ($15.33 billion) on an artificial intelligence data centre in Portugal, the big tech’s president Brad Smith told local newspaper Jornal de Negócios at the Web Summit in Lisbon.

The context: The funding will be deployed to build a data centre in Sines, a town around 150 kilometres south of Lisbon, where Microsoft will build out alongside Start Campus and Nscale.

A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed the investment amount to Bloomberg, while a representative from Start Campus said the USD10 billion figure aligns with ongoing talks on the next phase of development after the company in March opened the first of six planned buildings.

Microsoft secured leasing capacity at the Sines site in October, agreeing to rent capacity from Nscale as the US tech company expands its computing resources in Europe.

The big tech recently inked deals with neoclouds including IREN, CoreWEave and Nebius Group to meet soaring demand for AI services.
