The news: Fertility treatment provider Monash IVF has named Fleur Cattrall as its inaugural chief medical officer, as the company boosts its clinical leadership following a high-profile embryo transfer error last year.

The context: Monash said establishing a dedicated executive medical leadership role within the group is part of a “broader evolution” of its executive team, following the recent appointments of Vamsee Thalluri as chief growth officer and Victoria Atkinson as chief executive.

“These appointments are resetting the executive leadership team to bring deeper clinical expertise, doctor engagement, digital enablement and patient-centred care into future models of care and strategic growth,” the company said.

Last year, Monash revealed it had mistakenly transferred a patient’s own embryo back to themself instead of their partner’s embryo, at its Clayton laboratory in Melbourne. It came only weeks after the company announced it had become aware of another incorrect embryo transfer, which led to a birth, in 2023.

Former CEO Michael Knaap resigned in the wake of the second incorrect embryo transfer.

Monash said Cattrall — a former patient of Monash — is widely recognised as one of Australia’s leading fertility specialists, most recently serving as medical director for Victoria at Virtus Health.

Alongside her leadership role, Cattrall will continue her clinical practice at Monash.

What they said: “Elevating medical leadership into the executive team is an important step in supporting continued clinical excellence and patient focused decision making across the group,” said Atkinson.

“This is an important evolution for Monash IVF and, we believe, the IVF industry more broadly.”
