The news: Elon Musk’s AI startup, xAI, will open-source its chatbot Grok, a rival to OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

The numbers: In January, news emerged that xAI was in talks to raise up to USD6 billion ($9.08 billion) in fresh equity capital at a valuation of USD20 billion, in order to compete with OpenAI. OpenAI was last valued at USD80 billion during an employee share sale in February.

The context: Musk announced the news via a post on X overnight, which is likely to be seen as another attack in the current feud raging between Musk and OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman.

Just last week, Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, Altman and another co-founder of the AI giant, alleging that the company had reneged on its original goal of open-source, not-for-profit AI. The tech billionaire has repeatedly warned against using AI technology for profit by big tech companies, and has accused the Microsoft-backed OpenAI of chasing profits, going back on its promise to remain ‘open’.

What they said: Musk’s announcement on X reads: “This week, @xAI will open source Grok.” Responding to a comment on his post which claimed that OpenAI should follow suit, Musk replied: “OpenAI is a lie.”
