NBN Co cuts energy use in push to 2030 targets

The news: NBN Co has reduced its annual energy use by 25 Gigawatts across the national broadband network, in line with a commitment to cut its energy consumption by December 2025.

The numbers: NBN Co has upgraded 84 points of interconnection to deliver higher capacity and more energy efficiency, introduced energy saving modes at 2,400 fixed wireless towers and removed 3,200 legacy Pay TV line power supplies and equipment from the Hybrid Fibre Coaxial cable network.

The target to save 25 Gigawatts by December 2025 was set in 2021.

NBN Co's total outstanding green or sustainable financing stands at over $8.6 billion.

The context: The broadband network operator is seeking to reduce Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 95% by the 2030 financial year, compared to the 2021 base year.

What they said: "NBN is delivering a more sustainable network with faster speeds and greater energy-efficiency including rolling out new fibre across the nation," NBN Co chief technology officer Guy Scott said.
