The news: Netflix’s director of content in Australia and New Zealand, Que Minh Luu, will step down after about four years in the role.

The context: Luu joined Netflix from the ABC in July of 2020 to head up the global streaming platform’s local originals. She took responsibility for all content across Australia and New Zealand the following January.

During this period, Netflix has invested in a sweep of local content including the breakout hit Heartbreak High, as well as Boy Swallows Universe, based on Trent Dalton’s book about a boy growing up in 1980s Brisbane, and most recently Apple Cider Vinegar, a scammer series based on the Australian wellness influencer Belle Gibson.

Luu will stay on with Netflix as a creative consultant, and the streamer is set to advertise for her replacement shortly.

What they said: “I'm incredibly proud of the past five years setting up the team and slate and commissioning award-winning and loved shows. It's been a privilege to help shape what Australian stories on Netflix could be,” Luu said in a statement.

“I've loved my time at the company, and while stepping aside from this role, I'm happy to continue working on local content as a creative consultant exclusively for Netflix.”

Minyoung Kim, vice president of content for the APAC region at Netflix, said: “Que is a hugely talented creative, and we are enormously grateful for the work she has done in first launching our ANZ content team, and then building an impressive slate of loved titles like Heartbreak High, Boy Swallows Universe, and Apple Cider Vinegar.

“We wish Que every success for the future, and are pleased we’ll be able to continue working with her on our ANZ slate as a creative consultant as we continue with an exciting local storytelling journey.”
