NHTSA opens probe into almost 3m Tesla vehicles for traffic violations
The news: Tesla is facing a new probe by US auto safety regulators over incidents which saw its vehicles run red lights and violate other traffic laws while using ‘Full Self-Driving.’
The numbers: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said it is aware of 58 examples of these violations and will undertake a preliminary investigation across 2.9 million vehicles.
The context: An NHTSA filing published on Thursday explains that the agency has received reports of Tesla vehicles driving against the proper direction of travel during a lane change while using the self-driving system.
The preliminary investigation is the first step taken by the agency prior to seeking a recall of the vehicles if they believe they pose an unreasonable risk to safety.
In October 2024, Tesla recalled two million cars – almost all vehicles it has sold in the USS – to update software and repair a defective Autopilot system.
