The news: Nickel Industries has announced it has received approval to extend its Indonesian subsidiary Hengjaya Mine RKAB's iron ore quota sales from 9 million to 10 million wet metric tonnes.

This allows Nickel Industries to immediately recommence sales of its stockpiled iron ore into the Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park by haul road and barge.

The context: The 2025 RKAB iron ore sales extension was approved by Indonesia's environment ministry, and while the RKAB licence is issued annually, Indonesia's environmental lobby Analisis Mengenai Dampak Lingkungan (AMDL) approved this for a five-year period without requiring any modifications.

What they said: "The AMDAL approval is the first of its kind to permit the use of a pipeline to return HPAL tailings to the mine for storage," Nickel Industries managing director Justin Werner said.

"This innovation will significantly contribute to our goal of positioning ENC as the lowest carbon and cost intensive HPAL globally."
