Nine appoints ex-News Corp, Foxtel CEO Peter Tonagh to board
The news: Nine Entertainment has appointed former Foxtel and News Corp Australia CEO Peter Tonagh as an independent non-executive director.
The context: Tonagh led Foxtel as chief executive between 2016 and 2018. He previously spent a decade at the television company between 2004 and 2013, first as chief financial officer, then as chief operating officer.
He later served as chief operating officer, then CEO, at News Corp Australia between 2013 and 2016, where he was a director of real estate listings platform REA Group and acted as interim CEO for six months.
Since leaving Foxtel, Tonagh has held a number of board roles, including a three-year stint as deputy chair of the ABC, which ended last month.
What they said: "With his extensive career in media, and in data and digital businesses, I am confident Peter will prove a valuable addition to the Nine board, not only for Nine's contemporary business but also for our strategic aspirations for the future," said Nine chair Catherine West.
Tonagh said: "I am passionate about the media and its critical role in a democratic Australia — about the future of journalism, the opportunities of video and the further potential of digital marketplaces".
"I am excited about Nine's leading position in the industry — about the powerful suite of assets it controls, and the opportunities for those assets to further evolve and work effectively together."
