The news: Nine Entertainment has appointed Tory Maguire as the company’s most senior publishing executive, after James Chessell stood down as managing director of the company’s publishing business late last year.
The context: Nine chief executive Mike Sneesby announced the appointment on Tuesday, crediting Maguire with overseeing a period of renewal during her time as executive editor of the company’s metro newspapers.
Maguire, who has served as executive editor of The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age since July 2021, will now oversee Nine’s publishing business, which includes the metro newspapers and the Australian Financial Review.
Maguire steps into a role that comes with significant challenges, including uncertainty over the renewal of lucrative agreements with Meta and Google and sustained softness in the advertising market. She was widely expected to take the role on a permanent basis, and will now turn her attention to appointing her successor.
What they said: “Tory is a great executive, who has overseen renewal in our metro mastheads and has made some tough and brave calls about public interest journalism,” Sneesby said in a statement on Tuesday.
“The past two years running the metro mastheads has been the absolute highlight of my career and given me a close up view of the extraordinary work that goes into producing Australia’s best journalism,” Maguire said.
“The opportunity to throw myself into growing the business behind that journalism is thrilling. Our mastheads are a vital player in Australian society as well as a thriving commercial operation and I am very optimistic about their future.”
