The news: Nissan will sell China-made electric cars around the world, following BMW, Ford and Tesla that have taken advantage of the nation's cheaper manufacturing costs.

Nissan has also agreed to work with one of China's top universities for research and development of electrification, according to Reuters.

The context: Nissan Motor vice president Masashi Matsuyama said the company was considering exporting existing internal combustion engine vehicles and upcoming pure electric and plug-in hybrid cars manufactured and developed in China.

He said Nissan would establish a joint research centre with Tsinghua University next year. This venture will focus on research and development of EVs, including charging infrastructure and battery recycling.

What they said: "We hope that this collaboration will help us gain a deeper understanding of the Chinese market and develop strategies that better meet the needs of customers in China," Nissan President and Chief Executive Makoto Uchida said of the university collaboration.
