The news: Stuart Tonkin is set to step down as managing director of Northern Star during the first quarter of FY27, after serving the company for 13 years.

The context: Tonkin will remain as managing director until the conclusion of the commission phase for the KCGM Fimiston Mill Expansion.

The company noted that, under Tonkin’s leadership, Northern Star has transformed from a small-cap Western Australian miner into one of Australia’s top ASX-listed gold producers. Over the past 13 years, he contributed to the company’s growth through key acquisitions, ranging from Pogo in Alaska to the De Grey Mining takeover.

The board said a leading global search firm will shortly be appointed as directors evaluate internal and external candidates to find his successor.
