The news: Battery technology company Novonix has named Michael O’Kronley as its new chief executive officer.

The numbers: O’Kronley will take up the position effective 19 May. As a result, acting CEO Robert Long will return to his CFO role.

The context: Novonix said O’Kronley brings 30 years of automotive experience including 15 years in the battery minerals space. He was previously CEO of US lithium battery materials company Ascend Elements.

His appointment comes after former CEO Chris Burns stepped down in January after nearly five years in the role. Novonix is aiming to start commercial production later this year at its Riverside facility in the US, which will become the first large-scale production site for synthetic graphite for the battery sector in North America. The company is also planning a second synthetic graphite mass production plant, also in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
