The news: Andrew Abdo has resigned as NRL chief executive after six years, with ARL Commission chair Peter V’landys expected to step in as interim CEO, according to multiple media reports.

The context: Abdo, who took the top job at the NRL in April 2020, is poised to accept a position at Tennis Australia, which announced the resignation of longtime CEO Craig Tiley in February.

Under Abdo’s leadership, the NRL navigated the league’s Covid-enforced shutdown, delivered its plan to open the season with matches in Las Vegas, and introduced major changes to the sport’s rulebook.

He had been expected to play a critical role in securing the NRL’s next broadcast deal and collective bargaining agreement with the Rugby League Players Association, both due for renewal after the 2027 season.
