NSW to enshrine emissions targets in law
The news: The NSW state government has introduced legislation to enshrine greenhouse gas emissions targets in law and establish an independent Net Zero Commission.
The numbers: The Climate Change (Net Zero Future) Bill 2023 commits NSW to halving 2005 greenhouse gas emission levels by 2030 and achieving net zero by 2050. The Minns government noted it was already spending $1.8 billion on renewable energy infrastructure via its Transmission Acceleration Facility and Energy Security Corporation.
The context: The news comes as the NSW Minns government continues negotiations to extend the life of Eraring, Australia's largest coal-fired power plant, past 2025 in order to shore up energy supply. The new Net Zero Commission would report annually to "ensure parliamentary transparency and accountability", the NSW government said in a media release.
