The news: Nvidia has agreed to invest in Thinking Machines Lab, the AI startup founded by former OpenAI executive Mira Murati, and will supply it with chips to help it train and operate its AI models.

The context: In a statement published on Tuesday, Nvidia and Thinking Machines said their multi-year strategic partnership will see the companies deploy at least one gigawatt of next-generation Nvidia Vera Rubin systems to support Thinking Machines’ frontier model training and platforms delivering customisable AI at scale.

The firms added that Nvidia has also made a “significant investment in Thinking Machines Lab” to support its long-term growth, without disclosing details of the funding.

This marks Nvidia’s second investment in Thinking Machines, which was founded by Murati, OpenAI’s former chief technology officer in February 2025.

Thinking Machines, which launched its first product Tinker, a tool to help researchers train AI models, has been competing aggressively for AI researcher talent as valuations in the sector soar.

What they said: In a nod Thinking Machine’s pursuit of strong talent, Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang said: “Thinking Machines has brought together a world-class team to advance the frontier of AI. We are thrilled to partner with Thinking Machines to realize their exciting vision for the future of AI.”
