One killed, several wounded in shooting at Texas ICE office
The news: A shooting at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office in Dallas, Texas, has resulted in at least one fatality and multiple injuries.
The context: US homeland security secretary Kristi Noem wrote on X on Wednesday morning local time that “There was a shooting this morning at the Dallas @ICEgov Field Office,” noting there had been “multiple injuries and fatalities.”
The Dallas Police Department, also posting on X, said that one person had died at the scene after a “suspect opened fire at a government building from an adjacent building” early on Wednesday morning. Two people were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds, while the suspected shooter also died, the police said.
Noem also said that the suspected shooter is deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Texas Senator Ted Cruz said he and his team were monitoring the situation. “We are praying for the swift recovery of those injured, and we are deeply grateful to the brave first responders who rushed to the scene.”
US vice-president JD Vance condemned the incident via X, saying: “The obsessive attack on law enforcement, particularly ICE, must stop.”
ICE acting director Todd Lyons told CNN that preliminary information suggests the incident was a possible sniper situation.
The attack comes amid a immigration crackdown in the US since the beginning of President Donald Trump’s second term in January this year, with ICE’s activities prompting deep fear in immigrant communities across the US.
