OpenAI announces new tools to counter election misinformation
The news: OpenAI has announced out a series of new initiatives to counter the use of its products for misinformation, ahead of elections in the US and several global democracies this year.
The numbers: Over four billion people - more than half of the world's population - are eligible to vote in an election in 2024, as 40 countries are due to hold national elections.
The context: There are increasing concerns about the rise of "deepfake" images and AI-produced content that can be used to spread misinformation and misguide voters during elections. OpenAI has detailed new tools that will attribute information about current events provided by its chatbot ChatGPT, and help users determine if an image was created by its AI software DALL·E.
What they said: The company wrote in a blog post: “Protecting the integrity of elections requires collaboration from every corner of the democratic process, and we want to make sure our technology is not used in a way that could undermine this process.”
