OpenAI co-founder and chief scientist Ilya Sutskever resigns
The news: OpenAI co-founder and chief scientist Ilya Sutskever has announced his departure from the ChatGPT creator.
The context: Posting on X, Sutskever said that he will leave OpenAI after nearly a decade, and will focus on a project "very personally meaningful" to him, with details to be shared "in due time".
In a separate X post, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said Jakub Pachocki will succeed Sutskever as the company's new chief scientist. Pachocki joined OpenAI in 2017 and previously served as its director of research, leading the development of ChatGPT and OpenAI Five, as well as research in large-scale reinforcement learning and deep learning optimisation.
What they said: Altman said: "Ilya and OpenAI are going to part ways. This is very sad to me; Ilya is easily one of the greatest minds of our generation, a guiding light of our field, and a dear friend. His brilliance and vision are well known; his warmth and compassion are less well known but no less important".
