The news: OpenAI will buy product testing startup Statsig for USD1.1 billion ($1.7 billion) in an all-stock deal, in one of the largest acquisitions in the ChatGPT maker’s history.

The context: Statsig was founded in 2021 and builds tools for A/B testing, helping software developers test new features before they’re rolled out. Customers include employees at OpenAI, Eventbrite and SoundCloud.

The deal is subject to regulatory approval, after which Statsig will continue operating independently out of its Seattle office, the company said.

Founder and CEO Vijaye Raji will become OpenAI’s chief technology officer of applications, reporting to Fidji Simo, the new CEO of OpenAI’s Applications division.

The company also announced a broader executive reshuffle, with Srinivas Narayanan, previously vice president of engineering, becoming chief technology officer of B2B applications, and former chief product officer Kevin Weil now leading a new research team as vice president of AI for Science.
