The news: Telecommunications company Optus confirmed it is aware of a software issue impacting mobile services for some customers, with around 60,000 still affected.

The context: In an update shared on Monday evening, Optus said that if customers see “No Service” or “SOS” on their device, they are advised to restart their phone which will restore their service immediately.

“We have seen a further significant reduction in impacted customers, around 60,000 remain, with the majority of customers already having restored services after restarting their phones”, an Optus spokesperson said.

Earlier on Monday evening, the ABC reported that around 220,000 customers were initially affected by the outage, but that the number had fallen to 115,000.

The cause of the outage remains unclear.

Optus said that customers are able to make emergency calls to Triple Zero.

The outage comes after the telecom’s third C-suite executive departed the firm in January over the September 2025 triple-zero service failure which has been linked to at least two deaths.
