The news: Telco group Optus has partnered with US startup Perplexity to launch a new subscription plan that integrates AI-powered search engine tools.

The context: Optus said the partnership with San Francisco-based Perplexity marks a "key milestone" in its mission to make AI more accessible to Australians.

Optus will offer eligible new and existing mobile customers a 12-month complimentary subscription to 'Perplexity Pro'. The company said the subscription will let customers find reliable information faster by utilising Perplexity, as well as other AI platforms such as OpenAI and Anthropic.

The partnership is part of Optus' broader strategy to integrate AI across its products to enhance end-to-end customer experience, it said.

What they said: "We built Perplexity to make knowledge accessible to everyone," said Ryan Foutty, vice president of business at Perplexity. "Our partnership with Optus allows us to reach a broader audience in Australia, helping users navigate the digital landscape with confidence."
