The news: Enterprise software company Oracle is planning to cut thousands of jobs as it faces mounting costs from a large-scale expansion of its AI data centre infrastructure.
The context: The layoffs are expected to affect multiple divisions across the company and could begin as soon as this month. Some of the reductions will target roles that the company deems less necessary due to accelerated AI adoption, according to Bloomberg citing people familiar with the matter.
The planned cuts are expected to be broader than the company’s typical rolling workforce reduction. Oracle also told staff this week that it would be reviewing open roles within its cloud division, effectively slowing down or freezing the hiring process.
The company employed about 162,000 people globally as of the end of May 2025.
The move follows the software company’s announcement in February that it plans to raise between USD45 billion and USD50 billion this year to expand its cloud infrastructure, raising investor concerns about its rising debt levels.
