The news: Electricity company Origin Energy is currently investigating potential unauthorised access to customer data, according to an announcement to the exchange.
The context: Origin does not believe customer credit card or bank detail information have been compromised.
The Australian cybersecurity Centre and the Australian Federal Police have been notified of the potential incident, while the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner has also been “engaged”.
What they said: “We understand an incident like this may raise concerns and acknowledge the impact of this uncertainty on Origin customers,” Origin told the exchange.
“Our investigations into this incident are occurring as a matter of urgency, and Origin will provide further updates as appropriate.”
