The news: Perseus Mining managing director and chief executive Jeff Quartermaine will retire on 30 September after 12 years of leading the gold mining company.

The context: Quartermaine initially joined Perseus as chief financial officer in 2010, being appointed to the top job in 2013. He will continue to support the company as a consultant following his retirement.

During his tenure Perseus expanded its operations from one mine to three, with a fourth on track for first production in Q1 2027, according to a company statement to the exchange.

Former global chief operating officer of Newcrest Mining, Craig Jones, will replace Quartermaine on 1 October and will initially start working at Perseus on 18 August.

Jones spent 15 years at Newcrest before it was acquired by gold mining major Newmont Corporation in November 2023.

In addition to his executive responsibilities he has also served as Newcrest’s nominee director on the boards of SolGold and Lundin Gold as well as the company’s representative on joint venture committees.

What they said: “Jeff has transformed Perseus and has been pivotal in turning it into one of the most profitable gold producers in the world. He has built extremely solid foundations for the company to keep growing and we cannot thank him enough for such a positive legacy,” Perseus chair Rick Menell said.
