Private sector led Australian job vacancies to drop by 0.2% in November
The news: Australian job vacancies dropped by 0.2% in the three months to November 2025, led by a decrease in vacancies in the private sector, according to the latest quarterly figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
The numbers: The latest ABS data showed the seasonally adjusted estimate of total job vacancies in November 2025 was 326,700, a 0.2% decrease from August 2025. The private sector saw a 0.5% decrease at 287,400 while the public sector saw an increase of 1.8% to 39,300.
ABS flagged that November job vacancies were 31% lower than in May 2022, when vacancies peaked.
The context: ABS head of labour statistics Robert Long stated that there were 17,800 fewer jobs vacancies over the twelve months to November 2025.
Private sector job vacancies drove the annual decline, falling by 6.8% over the year to November, while public sector rose by 8.9%.
ABS reported that the largest fall was in the education and training industry, down 15.5%. The wholesale trade industry rose by 13.6%, while the biggest annual increase was in manufacturing, which rose by 33.1%.
The Northern Territory recorded the largest decline, down 11.3%, while Victoria saw the biggest rise, up 7%.
