The news: Russian president Vladimir Putin has been questioned by an AI-generated replica of himself during a lengthy news conference in which he canvassed a range of topics.

The context: A student from St Petersburg state university projected the likeness through a video link and asked the president whether he was aware of his doubles, and his views on artificial intelligence. Putin said it was the first double of himself he had seen.

During the news conference, the Russian leader vowed to continue fighting in Ukraine until the demilitarisation of its neighbour is achieved. He said Ukraine had to agree on the size and strength of its military or Russia was forced to take other options including military ones.

What they said: "There will be peace when we achieve our goals ... As for demilitarisation, if they (the Ukrainians) don't want to come to an agreement - well, then we are forced to take other measures, including military ones," Putin said.
