Qantas shares drop as airline renews board
More news: Shares in Qantas are down more than 3% to $9.09 amid a broad-based market selloff after the country's biggest airline said long-time director Todd Sampson will retire after 10 years on the board. It has appointed former Hewlett Packard CEO Dion Weisler as a non-executive director.
Todd Sampson to depart Qantas board
The news: Qantas has appointed former Hewlett Packard CEO Dion Weisler as a non-executive director, while Todd Sampson will step down as director.
The numbers: The airline said Sampson will retire on 31 July after more than 10 years on the board, while Weisler joins the board with immediate effect.
The context: Weisler, who is also a non-executive director of BHP, Thermo Fisher Scientific and Intel Corp., has extensive global and Australian experience. Qantas Chairman John Mullen said bringing in someone with Weisler’s international and technology experience will add to the diverse backgrounds of the other directors.
“Dion will bring immense value to Qantas as we accelerate our investment in digital improvements across our business while navigating the risks and opportunities posed by AI, cyber threats and increasing global connectivity,” he said.
Shareholders will vote on Weisler’s board position at the Qantas annual general meeting on 7 November.
