The news: Qantas is planning to reduce the number of Jetstar flights to New Zealand as the Middle East conflict drives up ticket prices, dampening demand for services.

The context: While declining to disclose how many flights would be changed, a Jetstar spokesperson told media outlets that the airline has “made some temporary changes to our schedule, including due to a rise in jet fuel prices as a result of the conflict in the Middle East and other rising costs.”

“All impacted passengers have been contacted directly, and most have been offered same-day travel,” the spokesperson said.

The Australian Financial Review reported that more than 55 flights — or 12% of services — have been cut from Jetstar’s intra-New Zealand schedule in May, according to data from specialist aviation analytics firm Cirium.

Jetstar’s parent company, Qantas, has so far avoided making sizeable scheduling changes, but did raise the cost of international flights earlier this month on rising fuel process.

Cirium’s Asia editor, Ellis Taylor, told the AFR that discount airlines such as Jetstar would feel the effect of higher aviation fuel prices much faster than full-service airlines such as Qantas.
