The news: Qantas has appointed Rachel Yangoyan as the new CEO of its regional and charter business, QantasLink.

The numbers: Yangoyan has worked with Qantas for 20 years, spanning a range of executive roles including customer experience, operations, airports, loyalty and strategy. She will replace John Gissing, who will retire in early November, but remain with the group for the next 12 months in an advisory role.

The context: The new CEO appointment comes after Qantas announced it had abandoned plans to fully acquire charter operator Alliance Aviation after the competition watchdog rejected the takeover plan. It also comes as QantasLink negotiates a pay deal with pilots who ferry thousands of fly-in fly-out workers. Qantas’ new CEO Vanessa Hudson said Yangoyan’s appointment completes the new leadership team structure that now includes Stephanie Tully leading low-cost subsidiary Jetstar.
