Australian regulator eyes TikTok over privacy concerns
The news: Social media heavyweight TikTok is under the spotlight for potential privacy breaches, as the Australian Information Commissioner inquires into a potential investigation, AAP reports. The commissioner is looking into the Chinese company's handling of private data and allegations of data-scraping using a tracking tool known as a pixel.
The context: The Australian government has banned the use of TikTok on government devices over concerns of data sharing with TikTok's parent company ByteDance, which has been linked to China's Communist Party. TikTok has denied any breach of privacy laws and said use of pixels are widespread and voluntary for advertising clients.
What they said: “My advice for TikTok would be to co-operate with the investigator in this matter," federal Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus told reporters at a press conference.
