Rio Tinto signs MoU with CATL to progress mining electrification
The news: Diversified mining giant Rio Tinto has signed a memorandum of understanding with the world’s largest lithium ion battery maker CATL to cooperate on mining electrification and battery material recycling initiatives.
The context: The MoU, signed on Tuesday but announced in a LinkedIn post on Thursday, commits the two companies to “strengthen collaboration across electrification strategy and innovation, supply chain and circular economy, as well as commercial and partnership models”.
The partnership aims to help Rio Tinto reduce its operational carbon emissions. Rival mining giant BHP signed a similar MoU with CATL in July 2025.
