The news: A son of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner has been arrested after the couple were found dead at their Los Angeles home, media reported citing jail records.

The Los Angeles Police Department said it was investigating an “apparent homicide” after officers responded to the Brentwood residence on Sunday afternoon, local time, and discovered two bodies.

At a news conference on the same day, LAPD Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton said a “death investigation” was underway and that investigators were seeking a search warrant for the property.

According to Los Angeles County jail records cited by The New York Times and WSJ, Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested that night and booked into jail on Monday. He is being held on a USD4 million bail, the records show.

The Reiners were found with stab wounds, the Times reported, citing police, family friends and others briefed on the case. Authorities have not publicly confirmed any charges or identified a suspect.

What they said: Tributes followed from Democratic leaders including Barack Obama, Gavin Newsom and LA Mayor Karen Bass, who described the couple’s deaths as a tragedy. Hollywood colleagues remembered Rob Reiner’s decades-long career as a director, actor and activist.

But US President Donald Trump mocked Reiner’s death in a Truth Social post, claiming the director and his wife died “reportedly due to the anger he caused others” through what he described as an “incurable affliction” known as “TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME.” He said Reiner’s “raging obsession” with Trump drove people “crazy” and called him “a tortured and struggling, but once very talented” movie director.

Reiner was a fierce critic of Donald Trump, calling him “mentally unfit” and “a criminal” in past interviews.

The context: Rob Reiner was a prominent Hollywood actor and director with credits including When Harry Met Sally, Stand by Me and This Is Spinal Tap.

He also was a leading figure in Democratic politics, campaigning for same-sex marriage, early childhood development and tobacco tax reform in California. His wife, Michele, was a producer and long-time political partner in those efforts.

Nick Reiner is one the Reiners' four children. He had publicly discussed struggles with drug addiction and homelessness, and co-wrote the semi-autobiographical film Being Charlie with his father, based loosely on his early life.
