The news: Russia launched its largest aerial attack on Ukrainian cities since the war broke out on Saturday night, despite US President Donald Trump last week calling for peace.

The numbers: Russia sent 367 drones and missiles (including ballistic missile) in the assault, with Ukrainian officials saying 12 people were killed and 60 more injured in the attacks. Over 80 residential buildings were reportedly damaged across the country by the strikes.

The context: The strikes hit cities including Kyiv, Zhytomyr and Mykolaiv, with three children among those killed in the attack. The attack follows the largest prisoner exchange of the war over the weekend, with over 1,000 soldiers and prisoners swapped between the warring nations.

Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strikes and called for further economic sanctions against Russia, saying “Russia is dragging out this war and continues to kill every day...This cannot be ignored. Silence of America, silence of others around the world only encourage Putin."

"Sanctions will certainly help…The world knows all the weaknesses of the Russian economy. The war can be stopped, but only through the necessary force of pressure on Russia. Putin must be forced to think not about launching missiles, but about ending the war,” Zelensky continued.

Trump’s two hour call with Russia’s Vladimir Putin failed to result in a ceasefire nor further sanctions from the US last week.
