The news: Russian missiles hit a civilian factory owned by US electronics manufacturer Flex in western Ukraine overnight, causing a fire and wounding at least 15 people.

The context: Local authorities said that site in Mukachevo was hit at around 4:40am local time by two cruise missiles, as Russia launched a “massive” drone and missile attack overnight on Thursday. Five cities in western Ukraine and the industrial city of Zaporizhzhia were targeted.

Ukraine Prime Minister Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that in total 574 strike drones and 40 missiles were launched against Ukraine by Russia overnight. He added that a significant portion of the strikes were intercepted, “but unfortunately, not all.”

On the US factory strike, Zelenskyy said Russia hit “a regular civilian business, supported by American investment, producing everyday items like coffee machines.”

He added: “There is still no signal from Moscow that they truly intend to engage in substantive negotiations and end this war. Pressure is needed. Strong sanctions, strong tariffs.”

The combined attack is the largest Russia has undertaken against Ukraine in over a month and comes just five days after Vladimir Putin joined talks with US President Donald Trump in Alaska.

On Wednesday, NATO fighter jets were scrambled and sent to Romania's border after a Russian drone strike landed dangerously close to its territory. The Romanian Defence Ministry said two German Air Force Typhoon fighters were scrambled "to monitor the air situation in the border area with Ukraine, in the north of Tulcea County".
